Completed Projects
The intervention of THE CONSTRUCTION OF TWO NEW BERTHS,INCLUDING THE APRONS BEHIND, AS WELL AS A PASSENGER TERMINAL ON THE NORTH BANK OF THE NORTH CANAL IN MARGHERA, involved the construction of two new berths for cruise ships and an associated passenger terminal which is planned to be located in Porto Marghera along the north bank of the North Industrial Canal and is part of the commissioner's interventions, pursuant to Legislative Decree 103/2021, the primary objective of which is to eliminate large ship traffic from Venice's urban waterways and, in particular, to prevent their navigation in the main navigation canals near Venice's historic centre.
The ships mooring at the new terminal will have a smaller tonnage than those that moored prior to when the Legislative Decree came into force. 103/2021, which docked at the Venice Maritime Station, navigating along the Giudecca Canal and St. Mark's Basin to reach the Lido entrance, and which could reach 175,000 tonnes , carrying up to 6,000 passengers per vessel.
The project involves the following works on an area of approximately 64,000 m²:
- 2 berths for cruise ships measuring 300 m long by 40 m wide and up to 100,000 tons;
- Quay area for passenger embarkation/disembarkation and baggage loading/unloading, as well as ship resupply;
- Apron for land traffic for the entry and exit of passenger and supply vehicles and for parking and loading/unloading passengers. Generally, the apron will not be used for long-term parking for passengers of the new cruise terminal. Parking spaces in this area will be reserved exclusively for terminal service vehicles (passenger transport, supply, etc.) and terminal personnel;
- Mooring for sea access to the cruise terminal via watercraft (vaporettos and taxis) located in the Brentella Canal.
From an environmental perspective, the project involves the reclamation of industrial areas, specifically:
- Build the embankment of the North Canal quay, continuing the embankment works already implemented and planned in the General Plan for Interventions to Halt and Reverse the Degradation of the Lagoon Ecosystem, while simultaneously constructing groundwater collection drains;
- Minimize excavation of potentially contaminated land;
- Permanently secure the most contaminated area;
- Laying of a surface pavimentation as an effective safety measure to reduce exposure to the future water collectors.
